New favorite emerging for Padres slugger Juan Soto

It appears highly likely that the San Diego Padres will trade their star outfielder Juan Soto during this offseason.

Although the New York Yankees were initially considered the front-runners to acquire Soto, negotiations between the Yankees and Padres have hit a roadblock. According to SNY's Andy Martino, the Padres have been seeking a substantial package, featuring pitcher Michael King and pitching prospect Drew Thorpe, who holds the No. 5 spot in the Yankees' prospect rankings. However, the Yankees seem unwilling to include King in the deal.

Facing an impasse with the Yankees, the Toronto Blue Jays have now emerged as the frontrunners to secure a trade for Soto, as reported by Héctor Gómez of the Dominican Republic's Z101 Digital.

Earlier in the offseason, ESPN's Jeff Passan revealed the Blue Jays' intention to make significant moves this winter. While the team is also linked to the Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes, acquiring Soto, either alongside or instead of Ohtani, would represent a major move for Toronto.

Adding Soto to their roster would instantly strengthen the Blue Jays, with the talented outfielder expected to take on the left field position. This move would enhance an already formidable lineup, featuring All-Stars Bo Bichette, Vlad Guerrero Jr., and George Springer, solidifying the Blue Jays as one of the most potent offensive teams in baseball.

One potential hurdle in finalizing a Soto trade is his contract situation, entering the final year with impending free agency next offseason. Given the uncertainty of Soto's re-signing with any potential trade destination, teams are likely cautious about meeting the Padres' asking price, considering him a short-term rental.

As the Winter Meetings kick off in Nashville, the likelihood of a Soto trade happening soon is heightened. Currently, the momentum suggests that Soto could find himself playing for the Blue Jays in the upcoming season.
